How Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and Kilimanjaro combine into one circuit.

Northern Tanzania is the complete safari menu — Serengeti's endless plains, the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire's elephants and baobabs, Lake Manyara's flamingos, Maasai culture, and the snow-capped summit of Kilimanjaro, all in one connectable circuit.

Why the Northern Circuit works

The Serengeti National Park is arguably most captivating from June to October, when the Great Wildebeest Migration herds are in the north. In addition to the dramatic crossings of the crocodile-infested Mara River, you can witness lions, leopards, and cheetahs in their natural habitat.

Don't miss the UNESCO World Heritage Ngorongoro Crater — a vast volcanic caldera filled with life, including elephant, buffalo, rhino, leopard, and lion. Its unique ecosystem allows for up-close encounters and an exhilarating experience.

Tarangire and Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara National Park is equally exciting, with its shallow alkaline lake adorned with thousands of pink flamingos and a diverse array of wildlife — elephants, baboons, giraffes, and hippos.

Tarangire offers the largest elephant herds in Tanzania and incredible wildlife density during the dry season. For the adventurous, a Mount Kilimanjaro ascent awaits — a challenging, rewarding climb culminating in breathtaking vistas.

Maasai culture

The Maasai people, an extraordinary ethnic group primarily residing in Kenya and Tanzania, have captivated the world with their vibrant culture, rich traditions, and distinctive way of life. Maasai history stretches back centuries, originating in the Nile Valley of Sudan. These resilient pastoralists rely on livestock for livelihood.

Their society is organised into age sets, each with specific roles. Maasai warriors (morans) historically defended their communities and livestock. During your safari there may be opportunities to engage with the Maasai community, learn about their customs, witness vibrant ceremonies, and appreciate their unique heritage — a cultural exchange that benefits the Maasai economically and fosters real understanding.

Lake Manyara's pink shoreline

The best time to visit Lake Manyara is during the dry season (June-October), when lush vegetation recedes to reveal the splendours of the soda lake. Lake Manyara is a wildlife gem linking Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Scenic beauty is framed by the Rift Valley escarpment. The diverse habitats are astounding, offering a microcosm of African ecosystems — from dense forests to open grasslands, accompanied by giant baobabs. Avid bird watchers should come in the wet season (November-May) for the enchanting flamingo spectacle.

Best safari destinations in the north

The vast plains of Serengeti National Park offer endless views and outstanding wildlife viewing. Oliver's Camp in Tarangire is a sensational option for unique wildlife experiences and hospitality.

The Ngorongoro Crater is densely populated with animals, ideal for photography enthusiasts. It's best explored from Highlands-style lodges that offer more than just game drives. These wildlife regions complement each other perfectly and we highly recommend combining them for an unforgettable adventure.

Beyond safaris: Rubondo Island

Rubondo Island National Park — Africa's largest island national park — sits in the southwest corner of Lake Victoria, a short flight from the Serengeti. Predominantly lush equatorial rain forest with only a handful of camps, it's an exclusive paradise.

The forest is home to chimpanzees, elephants, sitatungas, and bushbucks, while giraffes wander the open plains in the south. Lake waters teem with Nile Perch, making for exciting catch-and-release fishing and memorable boating safaris.
