Conservation area overview
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a protected area and a World Heritage Site located 180 km west of Arusha in Tanzania's Crater Highlands. The area is named after Ngorongoro Crater — a large volcanic caldera within the area — and is managed by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority.
Its boundaries follow the Ngorongoro Division of the Arusha Region. Luxury tourist accommodation within the Conservation Area gives visitors access to the unparalleled beauty of one of the world's most unchanged wildlife sanctuaries.
The Crater itself
The main feature of the Conservation Area is the Ngorongoro Crater — the world's largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera. The crater was formed when a large volcano exploded and collapsed on itself 2-3 million years ago.
It is 610 m deep and its floor covers 260 km². Estimates of the height of the original volcano range from 4,500 m to 5,800 m. The elevation of the crater floor is 1,800 m above sea level.
Why visit
The crater was voted one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Africa by the Seven Natural Wonders in Arusha, Tanzania, in February 2013. There is more to Ngorongoro than meets the eye — the wider conservation area offers beautiful, adventurous walking through pristine landscapes, often with fewer tourists than the crater floor.
The Highlands lodges (boutique and luxurious) are deliberately positioned away from the busy crater for a tranquil experience and the opportunity to explore the surrounding terrain.
How to fit it into a route
Most Tanzania Northern Circuit trips pair Ngorongoro with Serengeti and Tarangire or Lake Manyara for a 5-9 day arc. A typical pattern is two crater-rim nights sandwiching a full crater-floor day.
Combine with Zanzibar afterwards for a complete safari + beach holiday, or with Kilimanjaro if you're building a trekking-plus-wildlife trip.
