Mount Meru is the ideal acclimatisation climb before Kilimanjaro. It offers a single ascent route through Arusha National Park, is escorted by an armed ranger, and passes through buffalo, zebra, and colobus monkey territory for an unusual walking-safari feel.
Location and overview
Located east of Arusha town, about a 20 km drive from the city, Mount Meru is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania. The mountain stands at 4,566 m above sea level inside Arusha National Park.
Meru has one route to the top. It can be attempted in three days, but we highly recommend four for acclimatisation. Most alpinists use Meru to acclimatise before Kilimanjaro. The mountain has less snow, formed from volcanic eruption.
The walking-safari element
Unlike Kilimanjaro, climbing Meru requires an armed ranger escort because the route passes through Arusha National Park. Along the way you'll enjoy a walking safari past groups of African buffalo, zebra, black-and-white colobus monkey, and more.
This mix of wildlife and mountain trekking makes Meru unusually memorable. It's especially valued by trekkers who want more than just a peak — they want the full East African wilderness character on the approach.
Trip duration and planning
Meru can be climbed in 4 or 3 days; we recommend 4 days (4 days / 3 nights) for better success. This gives your body more time to acclimatise at altitude before the summit push.
Pair Meru with a Kilimanjaro attempt, a Ngorongoro / Tarangire wildlife block, or a Zanzibar beach extension for a rounded Tanzania trip.
