Tsavo West National Park: Access, History, and Route Fit

A practical starter guide to one of Kenya's largest protected ecosystems, including the Maneaters legend.

Tsavo West pairs broad volcanic landscapes with strong road and air access, making it a useful anchor in longer southern Kenya circuits. Stretching across roughly 3,000 square miles, it carries deep history from the Stone Age ivory trade to the 1898 Uganda Railway and the famous 'Maneaters of Tsavo' lions.

Location and size

Tsavo West National Park lies in Kenya's Coast Province in the southwest of the country. It is divided from neighbouring Tsavo East National Park by the A109 Nairobi-Mombasa road and the railway line. The distance from Nairobi to the A109 is approximately 168 miles.

Tsavo West National Park covers around 3,000 square miles, making it one of the largest protected areas in Kenya. Its scale allows both short scenic stopovers and deep multi-night wildlife blocks.

History and the Maneaters of Tsavo

Dating back to the Stone Age, Tsavo once thrived on trade in ivory, cowry shells, animal skins, and (likely) enslaved people. In 1898, construction of the Uganda Railway began — the event tied to one of Tsavo's most famous tales.

It is recorded that 28 men of African and Indian descent were stalked and killed by two maneless male lions, listed in history as the 'Maneaters of Tsavo'. In 1963, the Kenya Wildlife Service (as it is now called) took over management of the park, which remains one of Kenya's most remarkable parks today.

Getting there by road

The drive from Nairobi takes between 4.5 and 5 hours along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway (A109), a journey of 168 miles. The drive from Mombasa takes about 5 hours.

Entry is through any of five gates: Tsavo Gate, Mtito Andei Gate, Chyulu Gate, Ziwani Gate, or Maktau Gate. Choose your gate based on which lodge you are staying at and which sectors you intend to drive.

Getting there by air

Guests can fly from Nairobi's Wilson Airport, with the flight taking approximately 1 hour. There are seven airstrips visitors can land at: Tsavo Gate, Ziwani, Kamboyo, Jipe, Kilaguni, Finch Hattons, and Maktau.

Mixing road and air transport on a longer southern circuit reduces fatigue while preserving game-drive quality.

What travellers should expect

Expect broad terrain, volcanic features, dramatic black lava flows (the Shetani Flow), the bubbling Mzima Springs, and wildlife movement spread over large distances compared with tighter reserve footprints.

A well-briefed guide and camp location strategy are key for productive sightings. The park combines beautifully with Amboseli (Kilimanjaro views), Tsavo East (vast plains), and the Chyulu Hills.
