Park overview

Tarangire National Park offers the chance to see the Big Five, Tanzania's largest concentration of elephants, and over 500 bird species. Despite being less popular than the Serengeti, it's perfect for travellers seeking tranquillity and ample space.

The park features breathtaking views of granite ridges, river valleys, woodlands, savannahs, and swamps. Tarangire is a beautiful destination south of Lake Manyara in northern Tanzania — colossal baobabs, grassy plains, and large elephant herds. It is conveniently close to Arusha and attracts fewer tourists, making it one of Tanzania's most underrated and tranquil destinations.

Wildlife

During the dry season, Tarangire boasts the greatest concentration of mammals in Tanzania — including wild dog, rare antelope such as gerenuk, and over 500 species of birds.

Large herds of elephants (over 300 strong), buffalo, and thriving populations of lion and leopard make this one of Tanzania's strongest wildlife-density parks outside the peak-season Serengeti.

Activities

Game drives: 7-seater, open-sided safari vehicles with canvas roofs, power points, and fridges, designed for all-day bush comfort near large herbivores and predators.

Hot-air balloon rides: float over the savannah sunrise and spot wildlife from above. Walking safaris and night drives (outside the park) round out a complete Tarangire experience.

Best time to visit

In early June, the park is green and lush after the long rains, with abundant water and thick vegetation. From here on, water becomes increasingly scarce as the dry season wears on; by late June the park is thinning out and wildlife becomes easier to spot.

Late June avoids both high-season prices and increased tourist numbers. July marks the start of high season as the park enters its prime game-viewing months. The Silale Swamp offers a permanent water source that attracts wildlife from a vast surrounding area — a wildlife spectacle through September when grass is very thin and short, and wildlife is at its most visible.
