Tanzania Safari Circuits: Northern, Southern, and Western Explained

How to choose between the Serengeti-Ngorongoro loop and the wilder south and west.

Tanzania's national parks are organised into three tourist circuits. The Northern Circuit delivers the headline Serengeti-Ngorongoro-Tarangire-Manyara experience; the Southern Circuit offers wilder, lower-density parks; and the Western / Central Circuit adds chimpanzee trekking and remote island destinations.

Northern Tourists Circuit

The Northern Circuit includes Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Lake Manyara National Park, Tarangire National Park, Arusha National Park, Kilimanjaro National Park, and Mkomazi National Park.

This circuit delivers the headline East African wildlife experience and integrates with Kilimanjaro trekking. Most short and mid-length Tanzania safaris are built on this circuit.

Southern Tourists Circuit

The Southern Circuit covers the Selous Game Reserve (Nyerere National Park), Ruaha National Park, Mikumi National Park, Udzungwa Mountains National Park, and Saadani National Park.

This is for travellers who prioritise low vehicle density, walking safaris, boat-based game viewing on the Rufiji, and a feeling of deep wilderness. Pairs naturally with a Zanzibar extension.

Western/Central Circuit

The Western/Central Circuit includes Gombe Stream National Park, Mahale National Park, Katavi National Park, Rubondo National Park, Saanane Island National Park, and Kitulo National Park.

Highlights include chimpanzee trekking at Mahale and Gombe, and remote, low-visitor wilderness at Katavi. This circuit is best for seasoned travellers on a return trip.

Beach holidays

Zanzibar is the leading island for beach excursions, followed by Pemba Island, Mafia Island, Bagamoyo, and Dar es Salaam. Pangani is also regularly visited and makes a good combination of beach and cultural tours.

A typical structure is a 5-7 day northern or southern circuit safari followed by 3-5 beach days — enough time to unwind without losing the safari momentum.

Safari tips from our field desk

Dress in natural colours (browns and beiges), wear khaki shorts or trousers with short-sleeved shirts or cotton T-shirts. Light woolens may be required in the evenings or early morning, especially on the Northern Circuit.

Comfortable walking shoes are ideal for bush walks. Sunglasses, hat, sun lotion, freshen-up towels, and mosquito repellent are essentials. Carry a camera and binoculars. Keep baggage minimal; soft bags are best, with a maximum weight around 15 kg.

Drink mineral water. Secure required vaccinations before arrival (check with the Tanzanian embassy in your country). Do not photograph people without permission or government offices.

Practical country notes

Language: Swahili and English. Electricity: 220 volts AC 50 Hz. Climate: tropical, between 22°C and 30°C.

International dialling: dial 000 + area code + number to call out. To call Tanzania dial country code 255. Personal mobile roaming coverage can be spotty; a local Celtel or Vodacom SIM (around USD 30 plus minutes) works well in most tourist areas.
