Samburu is wild and remote, hidden in northern Kenya with landscapes very different from the Mara's grasslands. Lofty escarpments puncture semi-arid plains, while the Ewaso Ng'iro River snakes through — feeding wildlife and Samburu cattle herders alike.
Landscape and setting
The wild and remote Samburu National Reserve lies hidden in northern Kenya, with landscapes very different from the grasslands of the Masai Mara. Here you'll find lofty mountain escarpments punctuating semi-arid plains, with the Ewaso Ng'iro River snaking through the heart of the reserve.
The river is a lifeline. Animals and local Samburu cattle herders use the dry riverbed as a motorway in their search for water, which makes the riverine corridor an outstanding place for wildlife sightings.
The Samburu Special Five
One of the main reasons to come here is to see the Samburu Special Five — a collection of unique animals endemic to northern Kenya. These include a distinctive ostrich, zebra (Grevy's), and giraffe (reticulated), plus an unusual antelope called the gerenuk, which stands on its hind legs to eat shoots from high tree branches.
These species genuinely look different from their southern counterparts and add a 'new safari' feel even for returning travellers.
Activities
There are many safari activities here, with game drives the most popular. Bush walks and night drives are on offer in the surrounding conservancies, as well as sumptuous bush breakfasts on the banks of the river.
The best place to stay is Saruni Samburu in the adjacent Kalama Conservancy. Views from the private luxury suites and infinity pools stretch far across the reserve, and the warrior guides are incredibly knowledgeable about their home area. For something different, you can go scorpion hunting at night or walk down to the concealed hide to watch elephants drink from the waterhole.
