Rwanda Gorilla Safari Classic: A 4-Day Kigali to Volcanoes Itinerary

How a four-day Rwanda safari structures gorilla trekking, Nyungwe, and chimpanzee tracking.

A compact four-day Rwanda circuit links Kigali, the Volcanoes National Park for mountain gorilla trekking, and Nyungwe Forest Park for chimpanzee tracking and endemic primate encounters. Ideal as a standalone trip or add-on to a Kenya or Tanzania circuit.

8 min

Day 1 — Arrival and transfer to Volcanoes

Arrive in Kigali and transfer to the Volcanoes National Park base in Musanze (roughly 2.5 hours from the capital). Relax, briefing, and dinner at your lodge.

Accommodation options typically include Kinigi Tourist Guest House or Muhabura Lodge (budget), La Palme Hotel or Volcanoes Gorilla Lodge (mid-range), and Mountain Gorilla View Lodge or Gorillas Nest Lodge (luxury).

Day 2 — Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Early breakfast and transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla tracking rules. You're allocated to a family group of eight trekkers plus rangers, following well-established trails.

The pursuit can take 2-5 hours, depending on the gorillas' location or where they nested the previous night. Once found, you spend one magical hour with the gorillas in their natural setting before returning to the lodge for dinner and the night.

Day 3 — Transfer to Nyungwe Forest

Early breakfast and transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park (roughly a full day's scenic drive). Lunch at the lodge; a guided nature walk in the afternoon.

Nyungwe is home to more than 300 bird species (including the Rwenzori turaco and the black-and-white casqued hornbill) and large troops of colobus monkeys.

Accommodation options: Nyungwe Lodge (luxury), Top Hill View Lodge (mid-range), Gisakura Guest House (budget). Meal plan: full board.

Day 4 — Chimpanzee tracking and return

Early report at the Nyungwe Park headquarters for a chimpanzee-tracking briefing. Begin the trek into the rainforest in search of chimpanzees.

During the trek you may spot different primates including Rwenzori colobus, Silver monkey, the grey-cheeked mangabey, L'Hoest's monkey, and vervet monkey. Drive back to Kigali for your return flight, or check in at a lodge for an overnight.
