Why Ol Pejeta works as a day trip

No other park in Kenya guarantees sightings of chimpanzees and rhinos, with opportunities to spot the big cats. This is the legacy of Ol Pejeta Wildlife Sanctuary — once a cattle ranch, now a protected haven for some of Africa's best wildlife.

Ol Pejeta has the highest predator density in Kenya, which means you'll also be tracking cheetah, hyena, and the rare African wild dog alongside the classic Big Five.

Day itinerary

Pick-up before dawn (05:00). The African sunrise on the passing fields and coffee plantations shows off its colours in easy morning light. With light cloud cover you may enjoy the snow-capped peak of Mt Kenya.

Stop for a special moment to mark your equator crossing from the southern to the northern hemisphere, and a breakfast stop to fuel for the day. Continue 15 minutes to Ol Pejeta for the first game drive.

Explore the park's northern area, home to a plentiful chimpanzee population. Keep watch for Big Five species — lions, Cape buffalo, African elephants, leopards, and rhinoceros (including the very rare white rhino). Visit the Chimp Sanctuary, the only of its kind in Kenya for rescuing orphaned chimps.

Lunch and afternoon drives

Enjoy a hot lunch at the Sweet Waters Serena Camp with 30 minutes of relaxation before returning to the park for more game drives.

You'll depart the park around 16:30, heading back to Nairobi, arriving at around 20:00, with many memories from a great day.
