Lake Nakuru sits on the floor of the Great Rift Valley and supports excellent birdlife including large flocks of pelicans and flamingos. Beyond birds, it's one of Kenya's best rhino-viewing parks, with introduced Rothschild's giraffe and the chance of tree-climbing lions and leopards.
Landscape and setting
Lake Nakuru National Park lies on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, surrounded by wooded and bushy grassland. Visitors enjoy wide ecological diversity and varied habitats — from the lake itself to the surrounding escarpment and picturesque ridges.
The park's main feature is a large, shallow lake that supports excellent birdlife, including a large flock of pelicans and variable flocks of flamingos. Lake Nakuru has breathtaking scenery — the Rift Valley escarpment, dotted with euphorbia trees, rises from the lake shore.
Wildlife highlights
The park offers easy wildlife viewing of most big safari animals, including elephants, black and white rhinos, giraffes, buffalo, and hippos. If lucky, you might spot lions that occasionally climb trees.
In addition to rhinos, Rothschild's giraffe was introduced here in the 1980s and has now become locally common. Vervet monkey and olive baboon are very common; the black-and-white colobus is rarer than it used to be. The acacia forest behind Mikingo Hill is a good place to look for leopards. Hippo, waterbuck, plains zebra, eland, buffalo, and Thomson's gazelle are common on the floodplains.
Activities
Lake Nakuru is ideal for birdwatching, game drives, hiking, picnics, camping, sundowners, nature walks, and photographic safaris. Its compact size makes it easy to visit on a day trip from Nairobi (approximately 3 hours' drive) or as an overnight stop before the Mara.
The park has experienced dramatic fluctuations in water levels in recent years, which can affect flamingo populations and trail access. We build in flexibility and check current conditions when sequencing this stop.
Best time to visit
Lake Nakuru can be visited year-round, but wildlife viewing is best during the dry season (June-February). April-May are usually the wettest months — rain may interfere with game drives and tall grass makes animal spotting more difficult.
In a typical Kenya circuit, Nakuru is overnight or half-day depending on the pace you want to keep.
