Hell's Gate National Park: Cycling, Hiking, and Volcanic Scenery

Kenya's only park where you can walk, bike, and rock climb among zebras and giraffes.

Hell's Gate is a raw, rugged corner of Kenya's Great Rift Valley. Unlike most parks in the country, it invites you to explore on foot, by bike, or while climbing its volcanic cliffs — an immersive, prehistoric-feeling adventure 15 minutes from Naivasha.

Park overview

Hell's Gate National Park lies between Lake Naivasha and the Longonot and Suswa volcanoes, on the floor of the Great Rift Valley (68 km²). The park represents an area of geological activity with diverse landforms — hot springs, geysers, and exceptional scenery.

Known for its variety of wildlife and scenery, Hell's Gate features Fischer's Tower, the Central Tower columns, and the dramatic Hell's Gate Gorge. The landscape is characterised by stunning volcanic scenery, towering cliffs, gorges, rock flowers, billowing plumes of geothermal steam, and extinct volcanoes.

Why Hell's Gate is different

Welcome to a raw, rugged, and utterly unique corner of Kenya's Great Rift Valley. Unlike most Kenyan parks, Hell's Gate invites you to explore on foot, by bike, or while climbing its cliffs — an immersive experience that feels like stepping back into a prehistoric world.

Whether you're here to hike through red-rock gorges, bike beside herds of zebras, or scale volcanic spires, Hell's Gate delivers adrenaline and serenity in equal measure.

Key facts

Location: southern Lake Naivasha, Nakuru County, Kenya. Established: 1984. Size: ~68 km² (26 sq. mi.). Elevation: ~1,900 m above sea level. Closest town: Naivasha, approximately 15 minutes away.

Hell's Gate is part of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) system of protected areas. It's famously named after a narrow break in the cliffs — a former outlet of a prehistoric lake that once fed early Rift Valley ecosystems.

Who it suits

Whether you're visiting for the day or planning a multi-day adventure, Hell's Gate offers a rare combination of freedom, wildlife, and rugged natural beauty.

As one of the only parks in Kenya where walking, cycling, and rock climbing are permitted, it's ideal for independent travellers and adventure seekers. Pair it with Lake Naivasha boat safaris and a Crescent Island walk for a full day of active wildlife travel.
