Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi To Samburu National Reserve

Out of the central highlands and into the northern plains with stunning views across the slopes of the Mt. Kenya, lies Samburu NR. Enjoy an afternoon game drive that introduces you to this beautiful park home to rarely found species such as the Beisa Oryx, Gravy’s zebra, blue-necked Somali ostrich, and Reticulated giraffe. A massive elephant population and the Ewaso Nyiro river provide for excellent game viewing.

Day 2: Samburu National Reserve

The reserve takes its name from a massive cone of volcanic rock which dominates the region in Kenya. The Ewaso Nyiro River marks the parks northern border on its way to Chanler’s Falls as it snakes its way to the Lorian Swamp. Many small hills dot Shaba’s landscape and with four springs, Shaba is better watered than Buffalo Springs and Samburu, two neighboring national game reserves. During the rainy season, the tracks are made passable only to four-wheel drive vehicles; this makes the reserve an even more delightful getaway. This is the essence of Shaba, a place for the connoisseur, the quality of the experience exceeds the quantity of wildlife.

Day 3: Samburu National Reserve – Olpejeta Conservancy

Today, we travel to the exotic Sweetwater’s Tented Camp in the secluded heart of Ol Pejeta Ranch and Rhino Reserve. The Jane Goodall Institute operates a remarkable Chimpanzee Sanctuary where we meet the primates face to- face and our camp also overlooks one of the busiest waterholes in the area and offers elephant, giraffe and myriad plains game. This is Africa as Teddy Roosevelt saw it years ago when he led one of the first safaris to tour Africa in comfort and splendor; our tents at Sweetwater’s Camp will remind us of this bygone era. Overnight at Sweetwater’s Tented Camp Drive time: 2 ½ hrs. Evening game drive – 3.00 p.m. to 6.45 p.m.

Day 7: Masai Mara Game Reserve

The Masai Mara is Kenya’s finest wildlife sanctuary; everything about this reserve is outstanding. The wildlife is abundant and the gentle rolling grassland ensures that animals are never out of sight. Birds too are prolific, including migrant birds and 53 bird of prey species. The climate is gentle, rarely too hot, and rainfall is evenly distributed throughout the year. When it does rain, it’s almost always in the late afternoon or night. The wildlife is far from being confined within the reserve boundaries and an even larger area, generally referred to as the ‘dispersal area’, and extends north and east of the game reserve.
Masai tribesmen live within the dispersal area with their herds, but centuries of close association with the wildlife has resulted in an almost symbiotic relationship where wildlife and people live in peace with one another. The first sight of this park is breathtaking. Here the great herds of shuffling elephants browse among the rich tree-studded grasslands with an occasional sighting of a solitary and ill-tempered rhino; thousands of plains herbivores such as Thompson’s and Grant’s gazelle, Topi, and eland offer a rich choice of food for the dominant predators: lion, leopard, and cheetah all hunt in this pristine wilderness. In the Mara River, hippos submerge at the approach of a vehicle only to surface seconds later to snort and grumble their displeasure.

    What Others Say About Us

I recommend Simba Paka Safaris. We had a great experience at the Maasai Mara with our guide who was extremely knowledgeable and managed to help us see all the animals that we wanted to see. Diana B
I did the 4 day Masai Mara and Lake Nakuru safaris. From start to finish, Simba Paka Tours was professional, reactive, and great at communicating all facets of the trip. I did the mid-range tour and Paul organized my hotels on arrival and departure, transfers, and the best tour guide possible. If you do this tour and you get Johnny Jackson as a guide, you will be very lucky. Hellen W
